Spring 2023

May 2023 -- Mission Support: Buffalo Peace House

Our community has been supportive of Buffalo Peace House since they began sheltering refugees and asylum seekers more than ten years ago.    Recently, they moved to a facility they own in Hamburg and are continuing to help residents in their basic needs for food, shelter and safety.   And they also provide much needed legal assistance as the asylum seekers apply for refugee status.   They are unable to get working papers until they achieve refugee status, so this is a high priority.  However, the current case load is staggering due to the influx of people coming to the US.

Mission Support during April:   Hearts for the Homeless

We were happy to hear a very informative update from Nick Calandra, describing how the mission of Hearts for the Homeless is expanding.  Nick gave us a summary of the tens of thousands of meals prepared and served by "Hearts" over the past year.   But, the new service model is to further expand the outreach to communities in need.  "Hearts" uses it's kitchen to prepare the meals and packages them to be served by warming shelters during the winter, and other homeless shelters year round.   By this collaboration, the shelters have lower expenses for meals, and can use that savings to provide greater essential services to the clients.    Two new locations are planned for this year, where "Hearts" has identified a gap in coverage for the needy living in those communities.   We will learn when these two near centers are up and running, and how much closer they will be to us.

Carol Colucci -- May She Rest In Eternal Peace
Our community mourns the passing of our dear friend and charter member of the JNMC.  Carol attended mass and activities whenever her health would allow her.   We are sad, along with Leon and the entire Colucci family.   Carol was always a pleasure to be with.
