April to Summer, 2024

April 2024:  Mission Support for Hearts for the Homeless

We continue to support Hearts for the Homeless and they expand their reach in multiple sectors of Buffalo.   The mobile soup kitchen continues its efforts near the main library in Buffalo, with hot meals served every week night.   The food pantry serves hundreds in the West Side of Buffalo every month.  And they have opened a second thrift store on Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda.   Everyone, young and old, are treated with dignity and compassion.

Nick Calandra spoke to us after mass on April 14 and explained the need for an upgrade of their commercial kitchen, and the capital campaign.

Update from Timau Mission:   Sister Joanne sent us an update on one of our sponsored children, Duncan, who is now in high school.   Click here to see recent photos and to read his letter to our community.  Duncan Update

May 2024:   Supporting Buffalo Peace House

Buffalo Peace House is a safe shelter for asylum seekers who are seeking refugee status in the USA.  We heard from Dennis Callahan and his mother, Mary Callahan who was a founder of the facility in 2009.  While in residence, men and women are provided legal assistance in support of their case and all the basic needs for food and shelter.   Government assistance is not provided until individuals win their case for refugee status, so Buffalo Peace house is an essential source of support.

June 2024:   Mission Support for Harvest House

Our community welcomed Harvest House President, Carol Murphy and Chief Diversity Officer, Brandy Loveland.  The two described the dignity that is a part of every service offered to members of the community.   This includes the help given to adult students, families in need of clothing for children, men and women in need of medical and dental care.   This "wellspring" of service is offered with the hope that those receiving assistance will someday, provide service to others as a reflection of the help they received.

"Food as Medicine"
Every Tuesday and Thursday, fresh produced is distributed to any and all clients who visit Harvest House for any of the services provided at the Ministry Center on Jefferson Ave.  The food is made available through a grant at SUNY at Buffalo.

July and August 2024

Our community supported organizations this summer that continue to help those with the greatest need.  In July, our donations were collected and sent to the Nicaraguan Mission.   Over the past few years, the shipments from WNY have been blocked by the government.  Therefore, our donations are being discretely sent to a trustworthy priest who lives in Nicaragua.   He knows the needs of indiviual families and provides much needed financial help.   Ann Marie Zon is very grateful for our continued assistance.

Summer Liturgies

Our community continued our traditional, outdoor Sunday mass behind the Bender's store, thanks to the hospitality of the new owners of the building.  Thank you, Tom Stoddard, for asking the right person, the right question, at the right time.

Backpacks for Sister Johnice:  Response to Love Center

Our community donated back-to-school supplies for clients, who rely on the Response to Love Center for school necessities.  With the help of the Teacher's Desk in Buffalo, we supplied RTL with 40 filled backpacks.   Sister Johnice makes sure each backpack is filled with supplies that are specific for each child in his or her grade.

In August, the community donated funds to help Friends of Night People in Buffalo.  This organization has expanded operations to provide food for families and meals for the homeless in Buffalo.  Friends of the Night People also hosts a medical clinic twice a month, haircuts, rapid HIV and hepatitis testing, showers, lockers, laundry, and mail services for guests.

                 Summer Picnic
Once again, our Newman Mission summer picnic was a wonderful gathering in Sunset Park.   We are very grateful for the planning and organization of Diane and Ralph Mercuri.   All the details are carefully thought out and planned, so the community enjoys this gathering every year.
